Borough no longer provides Green Residue Collection Service

posted by Bluesman at 12h37

The Borough of Pierrefonds no longer provides periodic pickup of leaves, branches and similar material to be composted.

Previously, using transparent plastic bags, citizens were able to put out excess waste material to be taken to the city yard, composted, and distributed the following year to those in need of compost for their gardens. This was a valuable service since often home composting bins fill up rapidly and are insufficient to handle additional material generated by homeowners, such as grass clippings, hedge branches, leaves, etc.

In addition, a periodic mulching service provided to dispose of tree branches is a "fee based" service not covered by residents' tax dollars.
Many residents are not aware of these policies and that they must use other disposal solutions.

Disposal of pruned tree branches that are up to 2" (50 mm) in diameter and not exceeding three feet (one metre), in length, may be tied and bundled for pickup with their regular garbage. Branches exceeding the 2" size, require contacting the borough and is subject to a base fee of $15, plus an additional charge of $2.50 per square metre for all branches. These fees must be pre-paid to obtain this service.
It has become increasingly difficult for many seniors to cope with disposal of "green residue" and many cannot afford additional fees to pay for such services.

Green residue disposal

Interestingly, we just received our latest Pierrefonds bulletin, and an added sheet came along with it addressing this issue. The note stated that starting this September some services will be available (for about a 12 week period) for disposal and composting of some of the green material residue we accumulate and must toss out. It appears that this is in cooperation with a provincial program that has been underway for the last 10 years.

While there is no information pertaining to this subject in the bulletin booklet per se, the included information sheet provides full details as to what will be picked up and how these items must be prepared.

It's good to know that some of this service has been restored and I for one was pleased to learn of this development!
