Every time I drive past the empty, weed-encrusted building which is the Pincourt Arena on the corner of Fifth Ave. and Pincourt Blvd., I thank the stars above that my kids don’t play hockey. (I remember the days, a couple of years ago, when Saturday and Sunday morning hockey practices were met with protests and temper tantrums from my son.)
The abandoned building is a seasonal reminder that hockey teams from Île Perrot, Pincourt, Terrasse Vaudreuil and Notre Dame de l’Île Perrot will once again have to trek to venues in Vaudreuil or Ste. Anne de Bellevue for yet another hockey season.
For those scheduled to play at the Macdonald Arena in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, be prepared to factor in the detour to Morgan since the exit from Île Perrot is closed until December.
The construction of the Pincourt arena in Île Perrot came to an abrupt halt in 2003 and the building has stood dormant ever since. With legal entanglements that will likely carry well into 2009, it is a pipe dream that Île Perrot residents will have a local arena any time soon.
However, my scenic drive past the arena had not been for naught. It was on one of my morning runs to Tim Horton’s for that steaming cup of liquid gold when an ingenious idea came to me. Who better to save us from another frigid season of outdoor skating than the Tim Horton’s conglomerate?
When those Über-dedicated hockey parents are cheering on their little Wayne Gretzkys and Mario Lemieuxs from the stands, what exactly are they holding in their hot little hands?
Why, that’s a Tim Horton’s coffee cup!
And what’s that on the jerseys of their young progenies (or prodigies in some cases)?
I do believe that it’s a Tim Horton’s logo.
I’m sure the hockey veteran himself, if he were still with us, would not want our future hockey stars wasting precious time shuttling from one municipal arena to another when they could be honing their athletic skills right here in Pincourt.
So, it is with that in mind that I propose Tim Horton’s install a drive through window and indoor counter right inside the arena!
Fellow Tim Horton’s coffee addicts will attest that we need another Tim Horton’s. The long lineup in the morning is proof positive.
The original budget for the sports complex was $1.8 million. A couple of months of operation; Tim Horton’s will have easily recouped their investment.
I've probably spent that much just in the last year at Tim Horton’s.
I think they owe me.
