The call last Monday by the Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to the government, for more policing powers to deal with Quebec's animal welfare industry, is warranted. They want this clout because of the woeful lack of government will to really crack down on this multi-million dollar business. It takes too long to get things done efficiently.
The request brings to mind the presence of the SPCA, who joined about 20 other groups, at a Community Day, in 2005, organized by the Grade 9 leadership class of Riverdale High School. Soon after the event, the SPCA wrote us a letter.
Here is an excerpt:
"We appreciate the opportunity to connect with students and making them aware of the importance of speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves. Soon, these students will be community and social leaders in our society, and they will choose whether we live in a society that protects animals or a society that neglects animals. We want these enthusiastic people on our team!"
Perhaps these co-ordinates of the department responsible for animal negligence and exploitation in Quebec may be useful to anyone who wants to help.

The manner we regard our animals is a reflection of our values as a society, and how we treat each other.
