Where in the World Are John Abbott College Volunteers
Out and about in your community!
Students in John Abbott College professor Barry Reynolds’s Community and Communication class join forces with Volunteer West Island toward breaking isolation seniors often face.
In addition to running the popular weekly “Brunch & Bingo” at Volunteer West Island headquarters, professor Reynolds’s students are involved in a variety of other volunteer activities, in conjunction with Volunteer West Island, the only volunteer recruitment organization in the West Island.
Places JAC volunteers can be found include Centre Bienvenue and Omega Centre where they assist with social activities, visual arts workshops, and meal preparation. They are in evidence at CHSLDs Dorval, Bayview, and Vigi Pierrefonds, helping animate recreational activities, serving meals, and socializing with residents. They lend a hand at Norma McAlister and Vents de l’Ouest residences, animating Bingo Night, taking residents on outings, and teaching computer skills. You will find JAC volunteers on the job at NOVA Thrift Shops and West Island Assistance Fund headquarters; they are also involved with Progressive Bowling and Projet Communautaire de Pierrefonds.
In addition, JAC students help VWI’s on-site and outreach programs, including the Seniors’ Café, seniors’ painting courses, frozen meal delivery, and distribution of flyers describing VWI services such as Meals on Wheels, Handy Person Service, and volunteer opportunities in our community.
These JAC students help us all stay connected. That’s what makes a community!
Imagine the possibilities!
