West Island Girl Guides & Habitat for Humanity in Mexico!!
There are four world Guiding centres located in Mexico, England, Switzerland and India. Every year these centres host different programmes for adult and girl Guiders to promote leadership, education, friendship, understanding and service to the local community. For over a year girls from the 2nd Beaconsfield Pathfinders, Lakeview District and girls from the 1st Valois/Dorval Pathfinders from the Valois/Dorval District have been planning a trip to visit our Cabana, the Girl Guide Centre located in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The girls will begin their adventure June 28th, 2008 and will return July 14th, 2008. The girls will take part in a seven-day Friendship session with other members of the Girl Guiding organization from United States, Costa Rica, Peru, Netherlands Antilles and Canada. During their stay our girls will take part in many different types of activities such as an International Day where all of the different travel groups will be responsible for creating a short presentation on their country of origin, organize and co-ordinate a day’s worth of activities for local children ages 5 – 14 years of age in Spanish, and spend a day helping to build homes with the organisation Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, they will be able to take advantage of, and participate in, Mexican cultural traditions and activities.
The importance and educational value of this trip can be hardly underestimated! During the past year our girls have been fundraising be able to pay for this trip and have been active participants in the organization and co-ordination of their responsibilities for the Friendship session. Not only will the actual experience at Our Cabana provide an unparalleled life experience, but so too all of the work to get there! The qualities of leadership, tolerance and an active membership in our world community can never start too young!
The girls would like to extend their appreciation and sincere thanks to all of those within the community who have contributed to their fundraising efforts to make this trip possible. Additionally, a very big round of applause should be accorded to the leaders and parents of the travel group who have graciously given their time to make this very special trip possible.
Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada is the leadership organization for girls and women in Canada. Guiding provides diverse and exciting programs and activities that offer girls the opportunity to discover new interests, learn valuable leadership skills and make lasting friendships.
