JAC Students and Volunteer West Island Connect

posted by Community Relations at 11h51

John Abbott Students Team Up with Volunteer West Island
Since 2007,

John Abbott College students in Professor Barry Reynolds’s Community and Communication class, a practical communication course focused on doing volunteer work in a community context, have joined forces with Volunteer West Island.

The JAC students are involved in several of VWI on-site and outreach programs and services aimed at breaking the isolation seniors often face. The students prepare and deliver hot and frozen meals with VWI Meals on Wheels Program, do telephone check-ups, assist with recreational courses and activities, engage in fundraising to benefit seniors’ programs in the West Island and help organize and provide entertainment at VWI’s monthly Seniors’ Café and weekly Brunch & Bingo series.

Volunteer West Island, the only volunteer recruitment organization in the West Island, provides support to over 100 non-profit groups within the community.

Through their weekly fieldwork, professor Reynolds’s students are involved in a variety of additional volunteer activities in conjunction with Volunteer West Island to assist these community organizations. Some locations where JAC student volunteers are to be found include CHSLD Bayview, CHSLD Pierrefonds, CHSLD Dorval, Norma McAlister Seniors’ Residence, Vents de l’Ouest Seniors’ Residence, Projet communautaire de Pierrefonds, Maison des Jeunes, NOVA thrift shops, Centre Bienvenue, and Centre Omega.

This communication course makes connections!
Imagine the possibilities!
