Remember that old adage, money can’t buy you happiness. Well, to quote Tony Soprano, forgetta ’bout it!
Seems it all depends on how you spend it, at least according to a new Canadian study published in a recent edition of Science Magazine. For the secret to true happiness, it reveals, is to share it with someone else, with donating to charity at the top of the list.
Well, it would appear that there’s going to be a whole lot of happy people in our readership area over the next few weeks as fundraisers for a myriad of worthy causes – both locally and globally – continue unabated. From the sublime to the hysterically hilarious!
Funny man takes on serious cause: He has headlined comedy clubs and appeared on TV around the world, starred in no less than 10 Just For Laughs Festivals and hosts his own comedy hour five nights a week on CJAD Radio. But ask Joey Elias to name his most rewarding gig ever, and the answer is unequivocal. Entertaining our Canadian military abroad.
He has four missions completed in four years, comprising two in Afghanistan, one in Haiti, another in Rwanda, and even one in the North Pole. Which is why this wacky, crazy guy with a heart of gold will be centre stage at The Royal Canadian Legion’s Branch 85/90 on April 25.
His mission? To raise urgently needed funds to help the veterans install a video camera security system to better protect the cenotaph, which was desecrated by vandals last New Year’s Eve.
Says Legion member, organizer and DJ for the evening Donald Smith: “The cenotaph is so symbolic for our community and the families who lost loved ones during these times of conflict. Joey deserves a medal!”
Roll call is 5 p.m., beginning with a lasagna dinner followed by the show at about 7 p.m. The address is 3015 Henri Dunant St., Lachine. Tickets are only $20. Call 514- 637-8002.
Kiwanis turns to comedy: Still on the comedy circuit, but again with a serious twist, screaming comic and tireless supporter of so many local charitable causes, Neil Janna, hosts what promises to be a real hoot April 19 for the Lakeshore Kiwanis. It’s their 6th Annual Comedy Night, and this time around it’s in support of Dr. Clown, those dedicated funsters who visit youngsters in hospital helping them in their time of need.
Having won rave reviews for his appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and in no less distinguished company than that of Prince Charles at the Prince’s Trust Concert, Jenna is a riot. And with a lineup that includes a Who’s Who of his Montreal peers, I suggest you book early to get a seat.
The Comedy Night is at the Sarto Desnoyer Community Centre, 1335 Lakeshore Rd., Dorval, from 7 to 11 p.m. with a cash bar and a light snack at intermission. Tickets are $25. For reservations, call Peter Nauth at 514-949-8412.
And in Hudson... Hudson is the stage for several fabulous fundraising happenings this month beginning with Hudson Masonic Lodge # 98’s official presentation tomorrow night of welcome cheques to Nova Hudson, the non-profit organization that has been providing community health care to the Hudson and St. Lazare area since 1956, and Scouts Canada for their international development project in Namibia helping to improve sanitary conditions in preschools there.
And on April 12, the Whitlock Golf Club is the setting for a benefit dinner and auction in aid of the Hudson Room of the planned Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Centre being built in Como on land donated by the Parsons family. Tickets are $100. For reservations, call 450-458-5523.
