With the notice from Ste. Anne de Bellevue town hall that flooding was highly likely to occur in the town, Churchill Branch 91 decided to play it safe and sandbag the waterfront side of their building.
With water levels expected to rise by one metre, this would have put the water about 6 inches up our back door, said the Legion's house executive Glen Turner.
With the assistance of the Ville de Ste. Anne de Bellevue the Legion prepared to sandbag on Saturday. With the aging membership of the Legion they needed to find some able bodied volunteers. Luckily on Friday night, a group of students from Macdonald College dropped in to listen to the live music. When asked if they would like to help the Legion out with the sandbagging the next morning, the response was a unanimous "Yes".
Sure enough at 9 o'clock in the morning (a time when most students a sleeping in), a dozen of them showed up eager to help.
What would have been a six-hour job to stack 7.5 tons of sandbags by the Legion members was done in 2.5 hours.
The president of the Legion in Ste. Anne’s, Michael Angrove, said that this support from the students is terrific, and proves that the younger generation are more than willing to help out in the community, they just need to be asked.
"I was amazed at the turn out, these young men and women are in the middle of their finial exams, and yet they took time out of their studies to come and help us out.
"I would like to thank them all on behalf of the Legion and the community. These students are the leaders of tomorrow, and have shown their commitment to the community today. The Legion is proud to welcome them any time."
Glen Turner says that anyone who has not taken measures to protect their property, should get going and do so now, after the water rises will be too late.
When asked "What if the flooding doesn't happen?", Turner replied, "I would rather be safe than sorry!"
