Funeral services for Cyril McDonald, the mayor of Pierrefonds for 16 years until his retirement in 1989, were held Saturday (Aug.23) in Lyndhurst, Ont.
McDonald, 81, died peacefully on Aug. 19 at his residence In Kingston.
“Community and volunteerism were his passions, as was his family,” Monique Worth, mayor of the Pierrefonds/Roxboro borough, said Tuesday adding that she, along with other councillors and some local residents attended the funeral. “As well, it happened that the funeral was on the day we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of Pierrefonds, so we dedicated that day to him.”
During his four terms as mayor, McDonald presided over the expansion of Pierrefonds's water filtration plant; he helped in the building of an intermunicipal library and was instrumental in the construction of a new city hall.
McDonald also viewed the construction of the town’s cultural centre as one of the crowing achievements of his career in public office.
Married to Inez Roberts for 56 years, McDonald had three children, Brian, Beth and Blair and was grandfather to Charles, Edward , Craig , Andrew, Evan, Ryan and great-granddaughters, Isabelle and Willow.
Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Lyndhurst , near Kingston.
Late Major McDonald
My sincerest condolences to the family of the late Cy McDonald. I was sad to learn this news, and I always felt that he was a "solid" major, and one of the reasons that Pierrefonds became the type of community that I wanted to live in.
