Items on the agenda at tonight’s (Sept. 22) city council meeting in Dorval include adoption of a second draft of a bylaw to prevent any more crematoriums from being built in the city, except in the industrial sector.
"Everyone knows I was against the construction of a crematorium on Lakeshore Drive but I had no choice as we had no regulations against it at the time," Mayor Edgar Rouleau said Monday.
"This bylaw will prevent that from happening again," he added.
Earlier this year area residents told city council they did not want a crematorium in their neighbourhood but Dorval Mayor Edgar Rouleau told them the city had no choice but to approve the building permit as it conformed to all city bylaws and regulations.
Jean-Charles Cardinal, co-owner of the 50-year-old Lakeshore Cardinal Funeral Home on Lakeshore Drive, where the crematorium is scheduled to begin operations some time this fall, said in an earlier interview that residents can be assured the crematorium will not have an adverse affect in the area.
"We got permits from the environment department even before we got a construction permit from the city," Cardinal said, adding that the permits are conditional to tests to ensure no pollution will emanate from the 15-metre high chimney.
"We have done our homework and we are well within the law," he said.
Tonight’s meeting takes place at 8 p.m. at Dorval city hall, 60 Martin Ave.
