A little change can do you good

Condos could be coming to Senneville. On the surface, this appears to be a bold move for the West Island’s tiniest town. With a population that hovers at about 950, it’s easy to see how a plan to build multiple-family dwelling in this little village known for its lavish waterfront estates can quickly raise a few eyebrows. But the issue involves more than just condos. It’s about green space. And that always causes a stir. But really, the issue is change. Change...

Public transit hits the streets of St. Lazare

The off-island town of St. Lazare on Monday took a big step. It started offering residents public transit.Buses started rolling, picking up commuters at stops set up throughout the town, taking them directly to the train station in Vaudreuil-Dorion.It is still not known how many people used the service, but with CEGEP students back in classes, the numbers should be impressive. Parents with teenage kids now have an option other than driving their kids to John Abbott...

There is something in the air this time of year

I spotted my first school bus on the street yesterday.Yup. It’s that time of year again.Fall is just around the corner. At one time, it was without a doubt my favourite season. But now, I’m not so sure. I still enjoy all of what autumn has to offer, except for two things. One, the days get shorter. And two, unlike in years passed, I’m no longer ready to let summer slip away. But the fall still inspires me. There is something in the air, a crispness...

If you're lucky, you never walk alone

In many ways, life is like a negotiation. There is give. And there is take. The art, of course, is how you give. And how you take.A group of women, some who I know personally, have come up with a fabulous example of how to give. They have come together to participate in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, a fundraising marathon walk that will be coming through the West Island on Aug. 28-29. They have formed a team called Lynn’s Sistas, and will be...

Has our spirit of fun changed?

So what are you doing for fun this summer? I had a discussion on this topic recently with two 11-year-old girls. We were walking out of the grocery store with, among other items, a bag of balloons. The plan, I was informed, was to cover the balloons with shaving cream and then attempt to shave them. They had read about the stunt in an activity book.So with $2.59 worth of balloons, a can of shaving cream and a Bic razor, they were off. The fun just exploded all around...

When faced with watering restrictions, many West Islanders go rogue

It’s the end of the first full month of summer and water restrictions in the ’burbs are in full swing. It’s the kind of thing that brings out the rebel in most law-abiding people. Why is that? Maybe it’s the heat? The humidity?...
