Our sense of community is still alive and well

Blog July 22Remember when someone in the neighbourhood lost a dog? They would put up posters on telephone posts and light standards. The idea was that if anyone had seen the mutt, they would call the worried owners. You hardly see those posters any more.I hadn’t really thought about it until I recently subscribed to a new email bulletin offered by my municipality, St. Lazare. I have written about this service a few weeks ago. It’s amazing....

Sometimes actions speak louder than complaints

I received a letter last week from a West Island mom who is upset that local soccer associations are keeping to their regular schedule of games despite the fact that the humidex reading is topping the 40 mark. The argument she puts forward is that the Lakeshore, Pointe Claire and Dollard soccer associations should cancel games during the heat wave, a time when Health Canada is issuing warnings to limit outdoor exertion. She has a point. It does seem a little extreme to be running...

Keeping cool in new ways

So how have you been dealing with the heat?I have found a new way to cool down after a sweltering day behind the desk and a fan: Sweating it out at the gym. Or should I say, sweating it out at the air-conditioned gym. That’s the key. It’s a little counterintuitive, I’ll admit. But heading for a good workout at the end of the day in a cool environment, followed by a nice coldish shower leaves you feeling refreshed for the rest of the evening. It has...

Airport rail link must also serve commuters. It's that simple

Is there any wonder why West Islanders love their cars?If you want to go somewhere, you walk out of the house, take a few steps down the driveway, get in the car and go. You don’t have to check with any schedule, worry about when you plan to come back. You just go. It’s that simple. The question of whether you should take public transit doesn’t factor into your thought process. It should, of course. But it doesn’t....

Who is lurking in the dark outside your house? One Pincourt homeowner was shocked to find out

Petty crime is nothing new. But how often does it occur? It’s a question I have wondered about ever since interviewing Tom Toth. He’s the Pincourt homeowner who captured thieves rummaging through his minivan parked in his driveway recently. He is somewhat of a night owl and had frequently spotted youths walking down his quiet suburban street at all hours of the night. Several times, as he looked out to see what they were up to, he noticed a neighbour’s car door...
