I have learned the hard way that Emily repeats everything she
hears....and that the repeating my include embellishments, fiction or
outright fabrication. At times, the repeating is verbatim.
During my weekly phone call with my mother, I ended up getting taken
to task about a series of comments that Emily made to my mom.
Now, the content itself isn't so important. A family issue, like all
family issues. People have opinions, feelings run high and strong,
judgments about who is right and who is wrong are passed. Aunts talk
with nieces, brothers and sisters talk, sisters and sisters
talk....and even when you think no one is listening?
So, along with her feelings about my mothers wardrobe, hair color, feet and musty smelling towels, Emily also shared some other verbatim information/opinions to my Mom.
And I got chewed out on Saturday by MY mom.
So then Emily got a talk from HER mother about what is appropriate
to repeat, especially if you know it is going to hurt Gramma's
feelings.....
And I got a lesson in what not to say in front of my daughter.
Very good advice! About 10
Very good advice!
About 10 years ago, my son was in Grade 2 French Immersion, and you know how it is, the teachers are supposed to have free periods for marking and such, right? So the Grade 6 teacher, took my son's class twice a week, for English poetry. (This goes totally against the concept of French Immersion, I know).
Now this Grade 6 teacher, I thought, looked around 60. That's the age I will be in around 8 years, so nothing wrong with that!
So let's say her name is Mrs. Silver. My son asked me why Mrs. Silver was always in a bad mood. I was busy with something, so I gave a quick, ill considered answer. "Maybe she should retire," I said.
Then a week or two later, the mother of a girl in my son's class told me that my son had told Mrs. Silver that I had suggested she retire. And Mrs. Silver had replied that she'd be happy to retire if I continued to pay her salary.
And I had thought that my son was the quiet type who never spoke out in class!
