Devon Willis, a graduating student at John Abbott College, has been awarded the $5,000 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship.
The award is granted each year to students across Canada in recognition of their environmental leadership.
Willis was recognized for her work in raising awareness of environmental issues within the college and leading the movement to make permanent changes to college practices, such as the use of compact fluorescent lights and an online carpooling system.
Willis, who is considering studying at McGill in international relations, also founded the JACtivists, a John Abbott group for human rights, environmental and animal rights.
“I am delighted to receive the scholarship, but I’m most satisfied with the results of our projects this year that have made a real difference in and around the campus,” she said.
