A campaign to reduce urban heat islands by planting trees on the private grounds of St. Laurent’s industrial and commercial park was launched last month.
“Over the next few years, St. Laurent will be greening its territory,” said borough mayor Alan DeSousa. “To this end ... our administration has set aside $100,000 over two years to plant trees along some of the main arteries in our industrial areas.”
He said the investment will target Griffith and McArthur Sts., as well as Henri Bourassa, Lebeau and Thimens Blvds., where a total of about 200 trees will be planted this year and next.
Hydro-Québec and the Société de transport de Montréal, as well as eight companies – Flextile, Geotech Precision, John Meunier, Laniel Canada, L’Oréal Canada (distribution centre), Rideau solutions de reconnaissance, Tuiles Olympia International and YKK Canada – have already joined in the project.
DeSousa said one of the purposes of the project is to counteract the effects of heat islands. Urban heat islands are caused by a high concentration of asphalt and a lack of vegetation, features characteristic of industrial and commercial zones, which account for almost 50 per cent of land use in St. Laurent.
