Missing child from U.S. found in St. Laurent

Child taken by mother last year

A baby boy who was reported missing from his San Diego home last year was found in St. Laurent  last week.
Montreal Police Constable Martin Desmarais said the baby, then a few months old, was reported missing by his father who told San Diego police he believed the mother had taken the baby and left the area.
“In July of this year, Montreal police were contacted by San Diego police to check a possible address in Lachine,” Desmarais said, adding that the mother had lived in the Lachine area “many years ago.”
“A team from Station 8 headed by Sgt.-Det. Gilles Lessard began an investigation. And last week, the child was found.”
The baby, now 18 months old, was found by police at an apartment in St. Laurent, where a friend of the baby’s mother lives.
The mother was not in the apartment when the child was found.
The baby has been put under the care of child services, said Desmarais, adding that the baby’s father, a U.S. citizen, cannot take the child until court proceedings are finalized.
Desmarais said the mother did not attend a court hearing last Friday.
“The investigation continues” Desmarais said.
