Ella Marchildon may have finally gotten government approval to pay for her rare surgical treatment, but the local community hasn’t stopped its energetic fundraising for the Kirkland woman.
There was a Women’s Boutique Fundraiser in her honour last weekend at St. Thomas High School in Pointe Claire and other fundraisers are still planned.
Marchildon is recovering in Washington, D.C., and a family member who answered the phone at her Kirkland home this week said it’s not yet known when she’ll be coming home.
Marchildon, 44, suffers from a rare form of cancer, signet ring cell carcinoma, and needed specialized surgery at the Sugarbaker Oncology Clinic in Washington. The Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec at first refused to pay for the treatment, but finally agreed after news of her plight sparked a wave of sympathy and outrage.
