Parti Québécois leader Pauline Marois was kept in hospital
overnight last night after checking herself in complaining of nausea
and a stomach ache.
Her staff last night stressed that Marois is in no danger but
doctors decided to keep her in overnight under observation and to
complete a series of tests.
"It's nothing serious or major," said Marois's press secretary
Marie Barrette. "She is completely lucid.
"She underwent some tests but they are not all complete so they
decided to keep her in until (this) morning. It is probably a benign
infection but the tests are not completed so we will wait for a full
medical assessment."
Barrette said doctors had ruled out initial suspicions - picked up
in news reports - that Marois, 58, was suffering from food
poisoning.
Marois is at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe Claire, the
hospital closest to her home on Île Bizard. She woke up yesterday
feeling poorly so she and her husband went to the hospital.
Her illness forced her to cancel a scheduled speech at a Bloc
Québécois election campaign launch at Complexe Désjardins yesterday.
Marois's last public appearance was Saturday when she attended
funeral services for journalist Michel Vastel. She should be
resuming her normal activities tomorrow, Barrette said.
