Crematoriums now limited to industrial sector in Dorval

Lakeshore Drive crematorium set to begin operations this fall

Another crematorium will not be allowed in the city of Dorval’s commercial and residential areas.
Following complaints over construction a crematorium earlier this year as part of an expansion of a funeral home on Lakeshore Drive, city council adopted an amendment to a bylaw Monday night that will prevent any more crematoriums from being built in the city, except in the industrial sector.
Jean-Charles Cardinal, co-owner of the 50-year-old Lakeshore Cardinal Funeral Home on Lakeshore Drive, where the crematorium is scheduled to begin operations this fall, has said that residents can be assured the crematorium will not have an adverse affect.
“We got permits from the environment department even before we got a construction permit from the city,” Cardinal said.
The permits are conditional to tests to ensure no pollution will emanate from the facility’s 15-metre high chimney.
Those tests were conducted about two weeks ago. The results have not yet been released.
