John Abbott College unveiled a memorial plaque Tuesday to honour Bert Young, an outspoken activist who taught social sciences at John Abbott College for 30 years.
Young died Feb. 12, 2003, in an automobile accident just outside the CEGEP, near Highway 40, in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. He was 62.
Friends, colleagues, students and family – including his son Ryan, a well-known activist who also teaches at John Abbott, remembered Young as a fearless and passionate teacher.
The plaque is beside the American Hackberry tree that was planted in Young’s memory in 2003 on the college oval in front of the Herzberg Building.
“It’s a comfort ... to work at the same school as my father,” Ryan Young, a Green Party candidate in the Oct. 14 election and columnist with The Gazette’s West Island section, said earlier this week. “My dad took me here as a kid. I went to school here and, for a while, we taught here at the same time.”
