Welding mishap triggers explosion, destroys Kirkland house

Station #1

A house exploded on Colbert Place in Kirkland last week after a
homeowner doing some renovations ran into a welding problem.

The tank he was using to weld exploded and the single-family home
was destroyed.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire, at 2:15 p.m. on May 14,
from spreading to nearby homes.

Police believed there may have been an arsonist at work when an
abandoned house in Ste. Anne de Bellevue burned down at about the
same time on the same day as the house in Kirkland. However, that
was before the circumstances of the Kirkland explosion were known.

The house that burned in Ste. Anne was on Ste. Marie Rd. near the
Morgan Arboretum. Police have not yet determined if it was arson.
