A residential break-in in Île Bizard last week has spurred police to remind homeowners to make sure alarm systems cover second-floor windows and doors.
“Many homeowners only have their first floor doors and windows attached to their alarm systems, but we’ve seen more and more break-ins with the burglars going through second-floor entrances in order to avoid the alarm systems,” said Montreal Police Constable Daniel Maheu.
He said a case in point took place April 4 at a home on St. Malo St.
“The burglar climbed on a gazebo to gain entrance through a second-floor window and then took his time going through the master bedroom before leaving through the ground-floor patio door – and it was only then that the alarm went off,” Maheu said.
The burglar was gone by the time police showed up at 8:27 a.m., minutes after the alarm company was notified.
“We’ve even had some burglars who climbed up on a barbecue to get into a house through the second floor,” Maheu said. “Robbers know that many homes are only hooked up with alarm systems on the ground floor.”
Among the items stolen in the St. Malo St. break-in were passports, jewelry and cash.
