Pointe-Claire resident Marc Lalonde has been selected as a replacement commissioner by the Lester B. Pearson School Board.
Lalonde, sworn in last month, will represent Ward 10, which includes Clearpoint elementary and John Rennie and St. Thomas high schools in Pointe-Claire.
Lalonde, a community newspaper editor, and university student Nadia Kadri were the two candidates shortlisted to be interviewed by board members for the post. The final interview segment was webcast and is archived on the Pearson website.
The board had received 11 applications for the position, ranging from a university student, a retired educator to community volunteers, said Pearson chairperson Suanne Stein Day.
Lalonde replaces Constantine ‘Conny’ Held who died last month. Held had replaced John Killingbeck who died in 2010.
The province modified rules governing school boards a few years ago so by-elections are no longer held to fill vacant seats on school boards. It is now up to the council of commissioners to decide on who the new commissioner will be.
