Opposition to Batshaw facility in Dorval increases

The city of Dorval has collected more than 5,000 signatures on a petition opposing Batshaw Youth and Family Service’s plan to transform its existing Dorval facility into a locked facility for young offenders.

Although, the exact number of signatures was unavailable on Tuesday, a city spokesperson said 950 of the signatures were collected in the past three weeks since Dorval announced its plan to continue its court battle with Batshaw.

“It shows again that people in Dorval are opposed to this facility,” said Sébastien Gauthier, noting about 19,000 people live in Dorval and only adults over the age of 18 were invited to sign.

Dorval has requested the Supreme Court of Canada adjudicate its case after the Quebec Court of Appeal in August gave Batshaw the go-ahead to build the locked facility near Dawson and Dorval Aves.

François Ouimet, the Liberal MNA for Marquette, will now deliver the petition to the provincial health and social services minister and copies will also be sent to Batshaw and the law firm representing Dorval, Gauthier said.
