Kirkland is investing about $190,000 in electronic message boards to be installed along St. Charles Blvd.

On Monday, council awarded a $190,497 contract to Électroméga Ltée. to design, supply and install two outdoor electronic display panels.

The Candiac-based firm was the lowest conforming bid submitted for the project.

In total, there were four bids submitted. One offer that was about $1,000 less than the winning bid had been rejected because it was deemed to be non-conforming to required specifications. Another losing bid came in at over $330,000.

Two double-sided e-boards will be installed on the median in the centre of St. Charles Blvd. One is to be located just south of Hymus Blvd. and another north of Highway 40 near Brunswick Blvd., said Kirkland city manager Joe Sanalitro.

The installations are expected to be carried out in May.

Sanalitro said council will sit down before then to finalize a policy to determine what groups or associations could use the digital message boards, which will be managed by the city.

Kirkland will be joining a number of other West Island municipalities that have ordered e-boards to improve communication with their respective residents and which could be used to display everything from emergency notifications to community events.

For instance, Pointe-Claire’s new electronic message board on St. Jean Blvd. near Douglas Shand Ave. began operating last month, while Beaconsfield plans to install one on St. Charles Blvd. near Sherbrooke St.
