The North Shore Mustangs are off to a sizzling start to the 2008 midget football season.
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 on Friday night following an exciting 22-20 victory over the Greenfield Park Packers at the newly renovated Pierre Laporte Park in Greenfield Park.
“It’s always special to play the Packers on a Friday night in Greenfield Park because of the great rivalry between our teams,” said Mustangs head coach Justin McHugh. “It was a great game and our guys came through with a solid effort, both offensively and defensively.”
The Mustangs will try to extend their winning streak to three games this Saturday when they play host to the Sun Youth Hornets at Glen McHugh Field in Dollard des Ormeaux. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
It is shaping up as a grudge match as the Mustangs defeated Sun Youth 28-21 in last November’s provincial championship game.
“It’s going to be a good test for us,” McHugh said. “Both teams are 2-0 and look to be stronger than they were a year ago.”
Scoring touchdowns for the Mustangs on Friday were Justin Lavallée, Jean-Fritz Charles and Jean-Sébastian Plouffe. Gordon Hogan added three converts and the Mustangs defence recorded a two-point safety.
The defence was led by Shaquille Lattimore, a rookie cornerback who had two interceptions.
