The powerhouse North Shore Lions are headed to another bantam football final.
The Lions advanced to the championship game with a dramatic 48-28 victory over the St. Bruno Barons in semifinal action Saturday at McHugh Field in Dollard.
The undefeated Lions (12-0) will meet the St. Léonard Cougars in the Quebec Bantam Football League championship game this Sunday in St. Léonard. Kickoff is set for noon at Stade Hébert.
North Shore head coach Jason Jourdenais said this year’s edition of the Lions is a blend of youth and experience.
“We’re a relatively young team compared to previous seasons, but we’ve worked extremely hard to get where we are,” Jourdenais said.
Against a stubborn St. Bruno side, the Lions had to mount a gritty second-half rally to put out the win.
After the Lions scored on their opening drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by quarterback Vince Bourgon, the Barons regrouped to take a 15-7 halftime lead.
The Lions’ offence exploded for 41 points in the second half.
Scoring rushing TDs were Andrew Hopkins, Ernst Pierre and Tyrin Rose-Eisan. Bourgon also fired TD strikes to receivers Kyeon Nicely, Chris Cione and Jordan Tyrell.
Shawn Steen added six converts.
North Shore’s Patrick Smith shone defensively with six tackles. Killian Moore and Taevon Nesfield each had an interception, while Chris Watson recovered a fumble on a kickoff.
In CEGEP Triple-A, there will be no three-peat for the Vanier Cheetahs.
Hopes of a third consecutive Bol d’Or championship were dashed Saturday when the Cheetahs fell 24-17 to the F.X.Garneau Élans in Quebec City.
A fourth-quarter TD by Vanier’s Julian Bailey tied the score at 17-17, but the Élans marched down the field for the winning score in the final minute of play.
Quarterback Myles Gibbon scored the other Vanier TD. He also rushed for 140 yards on 22 carries and passed for 79 yards.
Running back Rémi Biakabutuka rushed 28 times for 70 yards.
Defensively, Byron Perez-Archambault led the Cheetahs with 10 tackles, while Anthony Thompson had eight.
