Kirkland Kid spotted on hockey radar

Louis Leblanc made TSN's Top 10 prospects list for 2009. (Tyrel Featherstone, Gazette).

The Kirkland Kid is on the radar.

Louis Leblanc’s name cracked the TSN’s Top 10 list in a pre-season scouting poll of 2009 NHL Entry Draft prospects - the only player from Quebec to do so.

No less an authority than TSN’s Bob McKenzie wrote that 17-year-old Leblanc “wowed the scouts” with a dazzling performance with the Canadian under-18 team at last month’s Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament.

Where Leblanc goes in the draft is anybody’s guess - a lot can happen between now and next June while Leblanc is playing with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Junior League.

But if he continues to develop and add a few pounds to his 6-foot, 170 pound frame, chances are good he’ll be a first-rounder at the NHL draft to be held in Montreal next June - just month’s before is expected to start freshman classes at Harvard University.

Raz Saltarelli, GM of the Lac St.Louis Lions, recently told me Leblanc might be the most determined young athlete he’s come across at the midget Triple-A level , where he scored more goals (85) than other player over the past two seasons.

While Leblanc’s natural talent is above average, his work ethic is even better, according to Raz.

Whether it was working on his skating or simply getting his homework done before a road trip, Leblanc was dedicated to the task at hand.
“The ones who make (to the NHL) are often ones who work the hardest,” said Raz.
