Abbott poised for sweep in rugby finals

 The John Abbott men’s and women’s rugby teams are poised for a championship sweep of the  RSEQ finals next weekend.

The Lady Islanders advanced to next Sundays championship game  after an impressive 37-0 victory overChamplainCollegefromSt. Lambert.

  Kelsey Lieberman and Laura Read led the Lady Isles attack with two  tries each.

Miranda Sample, Melissa Wood, and Dara Brunette added single tries.  Wood also added a conversion.

This Sunday, the Lady Isles will play host toChamplainCollegefrom Lennoxville.the women’s final is at   at noon at Memorial Field in Ste. Anne’s.  

 Meanwhile, the John Abbott men’s rugby team trounced College Brébeuf by a 52-3 score.

Malcom Baird scored three tries in the first half, while Thomas McDougall added one.    Afterward, Abbott’s Andreas Krawcyzk was named Player of the Game for his contribution to the Isles’ win.

  The Isles now prepare to faceDawsonCollegein the men’s final this Sunday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Field.

 In lacrosse, the John Abbott men’s team dropped hard-fought 7-5 decision to Champlain Lennoxville ina semi-final  playoff game.

  John Abbott ran into penalty trouble, taking 18 penalties compared to Champlain’s 4.      

Scoring goals for the  Islanders were Donavan Fleischer-Lafleur (2), Mathieu Peloquin-Letendre, Ziyan Zeng and Casey Brennan.

In women’s college hockey, the Lady Islanders (5-4) hosted first place Collège Lionel-Groulx on Saturday and skated away with a 5-3 win.  

Tonia Nucciarone scored after redirecting a shot from Nicole Allison    Late in the  second period, Marie-Pier Corriveau scored twice to tie the game at 3-3.

 Joannie Rivest potted the winning goal  in the third and  Abbey Frazer added an insurance marker.

 Abbott netminder Sarah Lussier was credited with the win.
