John Abbott once again rules the rugby pitch.

Abbott teams swept the CEGEP championships last weekend at Memorial Field in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.

The JAC men’s team continued its domination of the CEGEP rugby league with a solid 19-0 win over Dawson College.

It marked the Islanders’ 30th rugby title in 33 years.

Only Champlain-St-Lambert, who claimed back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990, and Dawson in 2010, have spoiled Abbott’s annual victory party.

Sean Smallwood paced the JAC attack by scoring two tries in the first half.

Ronan Coote counted the other try and added two conversions as the Isles took a 19-0 lead into halftime.

Rookie flanker Thomas MacDougall also delivered a noteworthy performance for the winning side.

The Lady Islanders were just as successful, posting a 34-0 victory over Champlain College from Lennoxville in the women’s championship game.

It was Abbott’s first championship banner on the women’s side in five years and it capped a perfect season for the blue and gold from Ste. Anne.

“The team can be proud of their undefeated season and their championship,” said Lady Isles coach Wade Ashworth.

“They accomplished something truly amazing by not allowing a single point against all season long, which shows the amount of pride they have to wear the John Abbott jersey.”

Miranda Sample, Mercedes Martino and Dara Brunette each scored a try to give the Lady Islanders a 15-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Brunette, Vicky Rochette and Kelsey Martin rounded out the scoring.

Mel Wood booted two conversions.
