Coach: Mike Deheuvel, 47-year-old Kirkland resident and systems analyst.

Team: Lakeshore Tigers peewee BB.

Years coached: Five.

Highest level played: Midget AAChateauguay.

Coaching tip: Take pride in your game.

Mike Deheuvel’s peewee BB Tigers are off to a strong start  and he attributes much   of the team’s success to a “never quit” attitude.

When did you start coaching minor hockey?

Deheuvel: Once my son (Sam) started coaching at six years old in pre-novice.

He’s 11 now. The only other time I was a head coach was in novice A.

Is there a big difference between single letters and double letters?

Deheuvel: Not really. It’s the same thing but as much faster pace. The kids absorb the same information, just some can do and some can’t. At double letters some kids can execute much quicker.

How is your team doing?

Deheuvel: I’m happy with the way they’re playing and how they are progressing. I thought they would peak more at Christmas, but they’re doing well before.

 What’s been the key?

Deheuvel: They don’t give up. Sometimes you don’t get the bounces. That can be depressing. But when you don’t give up and work a little harder you can get past that, and these guys do that. We’ve won games we easily could have lost, but they didn’t give up.

The biggest difference from atom BB to peewee BB?

Deheuvel: I’d say passing. A friend of mine told me passing would be the key factor in peewee BB. Other than that, from team to team, it’s work ethic and playing as a team. But the team that passes the best seems to be real effective.

Is there as much individual play?

Deheuvel:  The top atom kids can still take it end to end. In peewee, there are better skaters so the puck-carriers are going to get cut  off. Also, the players have good body position and harder shots.

Do you notice a big difference in player size?

Deheuvel: I do, but I don’t believe in taking size over skill at this age. At this level, who knows how big a player will get when he sprouts at 15 or 16?

Do you have a mix of first and second-year players?

Deheuvel: I’m about half and half. I have more first years than the other Lakeshore peewee BB team.

Do you enjoy coaching?

Deheuvel: I do enjoy coaching. I do it because my son is there. But I wouldn’t do it if my son wasn’t there.

Were you a good player growing up?

Deheuvel: I played pretty high level hockey inChateauguay till I was 15. Then I broke my ankle and I never went back.

How did you break your ankle?

Deheuvel: Soccer during the summer.

Some good players came out of Chateauguay.

Deheuvel: Yeah, I knew Glenn Currie, Mike Davies, Crawford, Bobby Dollas, I know them all.

 Do you play oldtimers hockey?

Deheuvel: I playKirkland Oldtimers…I also play with 94.7 Hits-FM.

What gives you satisfaction from coaching?

Deheuvel: The kids are still very innocent at this age. At peewee the kids can play good hockey, but after the game, win or lose, they’re joking about stuff.  Two minutes before the game, they get psyched up to play. That’s nice to see.
