Dorval's Fournel paddles her way to Beijing

Dorval’s Émilie Fournel is a study in perseverance. After failing to make the 2004 Olympic kayak team at just 17 years old, Fournel kept paddling away and will be rewarded for her efforts with a trip to next month’s Beijing Olympics. Highland Games coming to Pierrefonds

Goyens hooks up with Lewiston juniors

Jon Goyens is making the jump to the Quebec major junior ranks. The 30-year-old Île Bizard native was appointed an assistant coach with the Lewiston Maineiacs, under head coach and GM Ed Harding. It's a well-deserved promotion for Goyens, who earned a reputation for excellence here on the West Island. He started last season with the midget espoirs Tigers and finished up with the Lac St.Louis midget Triple-A Lions.

Beaconsfield's Horner is Beijing bound

The Beaconsfield Bluefins are not the biggest swim club around, but they have built a sound reputation as an excellent pool here on the West Island and beyond. Now they boast an Olympian in Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield. She's been striving toward her Olymic dream for years and next month she'll get her chance in China. Read more here.

Kirkland's Fernandez on road to recovery

Manny Fernandez was born in Toronto in 1974, but later moved to Kirkland and grew up playing his minor hockey on the West Island. Manny played midget Triple-A hockey for the Lac St. Louis Lions in 1990-91, before joining the Laval Titan of the QMJHL. Now he and his Boston teammate Patrice Bergeron trying to bounce back from injuries to regain their NHL form with the Bruins. Read more about rehab efforts ...

Pointe Claire's Little in synch with Olympics

The West Island has a long history of producing excellent sychronized swimmers, dating back to the Villagos sisters from Dollard to Beaconsfield’s Carolyn Waldo. Vinny strikes Lightning for $77 million

Montreal hockey fans longed for a return of their prodigal son, but Vincent Lecavalier, the pride of île Bizard, dashed their hopes this week when he resigned with the Tampa Bay Lightning for nine more years and a cool $77 million. Was there ever any doubt? While Vinny was careful to never rule the Habs out as a possible destination, he never ruled them in, either.

Anthony a slam-dunk for Beijing Olympics

Another West Island kid has made good. Joel Anthony grew up playing basketball in Dollard des Ormeaux, where he attended Emmanuel Christian School. Euro fever coming to Lachine

Enjoying Euro 2008? Well, young local soccer players are invited to score a Golden Goal of their own at a skills competition being held Sunday, June 29, at the Catalogna Soccerplexe in Lachine. The competition is open to male and female players from under-13 to under-16. Another category is for older players: under-18 to senior. Registration is at 8 a.m., followed by a skills competition (passing, dribbling, shooting) and other activities.
