Habs fans must keep the faith and keep it cool

Hockey fans riot downtown Montreal during Bruins series. (Tristan Brand)

Whatever the outcome of tomorrow night’s hockey game against the Flyers, one can only hope Montreal hockey fans celebrate (or worst-case scenario, drown their sorrows) without tearing up the city.

But the so-called hockey hooligans don’t only party-hardy in downtown Montreal.
An ugly 5-1 loss to the Bruins on April 17 in Game 5 apparently put some West Island hockey fans in an ugly, albeit fiery mood, as well.

About a half dozen recycling bins in Beaconsfield were torched by an after-midnight posse.

One local didn’t recognize the faces of the culprits, only the familiar sweater - although a case can be made these aren't real hockey fans.

Petty vandalism? Perhaps.

But disturbingly bush.

There was a time in Montreal’s not-too-distant history when Habs fans would savour a Stanley Cup victory without breaking single pane of glass on Ste.Catherine St.

Going haywire over a first-round playoff win or loss was unimaginable back then. Montrealers took their successes, and failures, in stride.

So keep the faith Habs fans and remember: From failing hands we pass the torch, be yours to hold it high......but please don’t torch the blue boxes.
It’s bad for our environment of hockey.

Besides, there are still two more series to go before we should all pop our corks.
