Montreal hockey fans longed for a return of their prodigal son, but Vincent Lecavalier, the pride of île Bizard, dashed their hopes this week when he resigned with the Tampa Bay Lightning for nine more years and a cool $77 million.
Was there ever any doubt?
While Vinny was careful to never rule the Habs out as a possible destination, he never ruled them in, either.
So, what’s Florida got that Quebec doesn’t, besides low taxes and high temperatures?
Hmm, consider that Lecavalier arrives at practice in Tampa wearing shorts and sandals, instead of a parka and winter boots.
Only two beat reporters cover the Lightning on a regular basis, compared to the pesky media horde here in Montreal. That means fewer headaches for the 28-year-old superstar who was the first overall pick Lightning in 1998.
It took years for Lecavalier to develop into the tremendous player he is. Would the fans and media in Montreal have been as patient?
In the end, re-signing with the Lightning for a yacht-load of money was probably the easiest decision Vinny ever had to make.
He’ll soon be counting up to $77 million somewhere on a beach in Florida.
Can’t imagine him doing that at the beach at Cap St. Jacques.
