John Abbott College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue is making a few changes to its sports program lineup.
John Abbott athletic director Steve Shaw said three new intercollegiate teams – men’s volleyball, competitive cheerleading and cross-country running – will be added to the program for next fall.
The JAC Sports and Recreation Department also announced it was dropping its intercollegiate golf team and mixed volleyball team for the 2008-09 season.
“We felt it was time to make some changes,” Shaw said. “We are responding to the needs and requests of our students.
“Deciding to discontinue both golf and mixed volleyball was not easy, since both teams have been very successful in the past.”
A lack of commitment led to the demise of the golf team, said Shaw, who once served as the golf team coach.
Cross-country running should prove a popular activity, Shaw said.
“It’s huge. Lots of students run, and there was lots of interest for it on campus.”
With the changes, John Abbott will enter a total of 19 intercollegiate teams next year – the largest number ever at the CEGEP.
“We’re usually around 17,” Shaw said.
Sunil Ramgulam has signed on to coach the men’s volleyball team next season.
Ramgulam coached the Abbott mixed volleyball team to a pair of divisional titles the past two years. Under Ramgulam, the mixed team won the Division 1 crown this year, following a Division 2 title in 2007.
Meanwhile, Stephany Derosa, a JAC student, will coach the new cheerleading squad.
The college is looking for someone to coach the new cross-country running team.
