The Pierrefonds Challenge seems to get better every year as soccer teams from around Montreal discover this gem of a tournament. It’s also getting bigger.
This year’s 13th edition of the 3-on-3 event attracted a record 230 teams (139 female and 91 male), according to tourney president Bernard Le Jour.
This year’s mammoth event was held in two stages. The boys’ side took place the weekend of July 5-6, while the girls’ side was held this past weekend at three locations - Dauville Square Park, Château Pierrefonds and Greendale Park.
The whopping 394-game competition ran smoothly, but rainy weather made for soggy field conditions on Dauville’s six micro pitches. Afterward, Le Jour said he would like to see the drainage improved at the site.
“We are lucky that we did not get more rain,” he said.
Champions were crowned in 17 division finals Sunday at Dauville, as fans were once again treated to action-packed soccer on mini fields measuring 20 metres wide and 30 metres long.
Teams from the host Pierrefonds club once again took small-sided play to another level. Host teams reached 12 of 17 finals, capturing six division banners.
Pierrefonds sides swept the U-12 age category with the Poison Ivys taking the A title and the Simpsons capturing the AA crown.
Pierrefonds Cobra teams also prevailed in both the U-14 AA and U 15 AA divisions, while the Pierrefonds Poquitos and Pierrefonds Gaitors took the U-18 AA and senior recreation titles, respectively.
Other divisional champions included the Mascouche Antilopes (U-9 B); FC Anjou Fusée (U-9 A), the Pointe Claire Fire Devils (U-9 AA); Pointe Claire Fire Devils 2 (U-10 AA); ASDV Eclipse (U-11-A); Greenfield Park Cobras (U-11 AA); Hudson Hawks (U-13 A); Pincourt Panthers (U-16 A); Lakers Pinecones (U-16 AA) and Monteuil Dragons (senior).
