Smith's Martlets finally strike gold: Kudos to head coach Peter Smith of Lachine, whose McGill Martlets bounced back from a stinging 4-0 defeat to Alberta in last year's Canadian university women's hockey final, to capture their first national crown on Monday in Ottawa.
The Martlets, who were making their eighth appearance at nationals in nine years, became the first McGill women's varsity team to ever win a CIS title by beating the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 in the final.
The emotional victory at the University of Ottawa Sports Complex capped a perfect season for Smith's powerhouse Martlets, who posted a 25-0 record in league and playoff action.
Forward Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland assisted on both McGill goals and was later named to the tournament all-star team.
"It was a huge win for our program," Smith told reporters after the game. "We have been knocking at the door for a number of years and it's really nice to finally reach the top."
Backstopped by national-team goalie Charline Labonté, the Martlets also posted shutout wins over Manitoba (6-0) and St. Francis Xavier (3-0) en route to the gold medal.
