NHL finally takes a stand on head-shots

The NHL looks like its finally ready to move on head shots. After three days of meetings in Florida this week,  30 NHL general managers unanimously agreed to the following language on head-shots: “A lateral, back pressure or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and or the principal point of contact is not permitted. A violation of the above will result in a minor or major penalty and shall be reviewed for possible supplemental discipline.”...

Girls hockey still skating the extra mile

Pull up a chair Canada, it’s Olympic hockey night in Vancouver! Our women play their U.S.A. rivals for gold on Thursday, while the men, led by Sid the Kid, take on Russia in Wednesday's quarterfinal tilt that will be talked about for years. The women’s game in Canada has come a long since its Olympic debut at the Nagano Games in 1998, but, locally, it still has a long way to go.Girls’ hockey still gets the short end of the stick when it comes to ice time....

You’ve probably heard the expression it takes a village to raise a child.Well, it might take the entire planet to raise Haiti from the rubble of last month’s devastating earthquake. It is pleasing to know that West Islanders of all ages are certainly doing their part to help with this Herculean relief effort....

Hockey hits just keep on comin'

By now everyone has seen the vicious elbow Patrice Cormier delivered to the face of Mikael Tam in a junior hockey game played Sunday in Rouyn-Noranda.Cormier’s cheap-shot has been shown repeatedly on TV newscasts across the country. The sight of Tam convulsing at centre ice makes for gruesome viewing – even for longtime followers of an often violent sport....

Where did all the Quebec hockey players go?

You won’t find any Quebecers at the top of the mid-season North American player rankings compiled by the NHL's Central Scouting staff for the 2010 draft. However, the good news for West Island hockey fans is that the highest-rated Quebecer is Pointe Claire defenceman Danny Biega, the youngest of three brothers (Michael and Alex) at Harvard.Danny Biega is ranked 31st on a list of more than 200 North American skaters eligible for next summer’s draft. But the rankings do...

In search of the West Island's best outdoor rink

I was pleasantly surprised to see so many outdoor rinks open to skaters over the Christmas holidays. In past years, some rinks didn’t open until after the holidays, which meant kids, young and old, were deprived of playing shinny over the holidays.Opening the rinks in January, when kids are back in school, never made much sense to me.But the early onset of winter this December has made 2009-2010 a potentially banner season in this age of global warming, or should that...

Hockey deals with another crippling injury

There was a benefit hockey game in Kirkland this week for Marc-André Émond, the 15-year-old midget espoir player who is still lying in a Montreal hospital bed after he was paralyzed from the neck down after getting checked from behind during a recent tournament game at Pointe Claire Arena. The fear is not whether this talented young scorer will ever skate again, but if he will ever walk again. Now the game of hockey Émond played so well, has been replaced by a...

H1N1 flu coming to a rink near you

No one is calling the National Hockey League the H1N1HL just yet, but already three players have been diagnosed with the illness this week.Washington Capitals forward Quintin Laing is the latest NHL player to be bodychecked from the lineup by the Swine flu.He follows Edmonton Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid and Colorado Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj, who’ve also contracted the nasty virus that is apparently spreading faster than you can skate away from it.On Monday, tragic...

Hockey tryouts a test of fairness

Hockey tryouts have come a long way since I was a kid.Gone are the days of the chaotic mass practice, where upwards of 100 kids would pile onto the ice and skate through a few simple drills, hoping to catch the eye of the head coach, who often was saddled with the dual tasks of lone evaluator and drill sergeant.Back then, we didn’t wear pinnies or numbered sweaters, so I can’t imagine how anyone was able to properly evaluate us....

Flu and hockey season on collision course

Have you been vaccinated against the flu yet?Me neither. But the annual flu and hockey season appear to be on a collision course this winter and the health of young players could be at stake. As we brace ourselves for the incoming barrage of H1N1 flu, also known as Swine Flu, no one is exactly sure how lethal this highly-contagious bug will be....
