On golden ponds

The stock market may be going down the drain, but you may want to invest in a new arena, if only... Hockey parents are once again feeling the pinch as the price of ice time at local arenas keeps inching up, year after year. Privately-owned facilities like the 4-Glace Sportplexe in Pierrefonds is charging more than $300 an hour for a sheet of ice and a prime time skate at the Excellent Ice mini-rinks in Kirkland will cost you $200 and change. Are rink owners gouging their...

Kirkland Kid spotted on hockey radar

The Kirkland Kid is on the radar. Louis Leblanc’s name cracked the TSN’s Top 10 list in a pre-season scouting poll of 2009 NHL Entry Draft prospects - the only player from Quebec to do so. No less an authority than TSN’s Bob McKenzie wrote that 17-year-old Leblanc “wowed the scouts” with a dazzling performance with the Canadian under-18 team at last month’s Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. ...

Louis Leblanc Night in Dollard

The Dollard Civic Centre should be packed with hockey fans this Friday for Louis Leblanc Night. The Lac St. Louis Lions will play tribute to their former star centre prior to the 7:30 p.m. midget Triple-A season-opener against the Magog Cantonniers. Leblanc, fresh off last month’s gold-medal performance with Team Canada under-18 squad at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic, will soon be headed to Omaha to play one season for the Lancers of the United States...

Kirkland's Fernandez on road to recovery

Manny Fernandez was born in Toronto in 1974, but later moved to Kirkland and grew up playing his minor hockey on the West Island. Manny played midget Triple-A hockey for the Lac St. Louis Lions in 1990-91, before joining the Laval Titan of the QMJHL. Now he and his Boston teammate Patrice Bergeron trying to bounce back from injuries to regain their NHL form with the Bruins. Read more about rehab efforts ...

Smile, you're on Hockey Night in Canada

So, what are a couple of West Island guys doing on Hockey Night in Canada? Why, cheering on Mike Babcock's Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals, of course. Roxboro’s Earl “The Pearl” Zukerman and Jay McMullan of Beaconsfield were both at Game 1 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit to support "Babs", the former McGill Redmen captain, whose machine-like Wings are up 2-0 in the finals against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins. ...

Minor hockey shake-up in Quebec

Hockey has united the country once again. This time, however, it is more a matter of simple logistics than a stirring gold-medal performance by one of our national teams. Hockey Quebec dropped a bombshell on the weekend when it announced it was reverting back to their old age tables in which age criteria for players will be determined by year of birth, instead of the school-year system in place since 2001. Truth is, neither system is perfect. ...

Habs fans must keep the faith and keep it cool

Whatever the outcome of tomorrow night’s hockey game against the Flyers, one can only hope Montreal hockey fans celebrate (or worst-case scenario, drown their sorrows) without tearing up the city. But the so-called hockey hooligans don’t only party-hardy in downtown Montreal. An ugly 5-1 loss to the Bruins on April 17 in Game 5 apparently put some West Island hockey fans in an ugly, albeit fiery mood, as well. About a half dozen recycling bins in Beaconsfield were...

Canada has insatiable appetite for hockey gold

Coaching the Montreal Canadiens is arguably the toughest job in professional hockey. Win big and the fans and media are behind you - lose a few and they’re calling for your head on a platter. But coaching one of Canada’s national hockey teams might be the toughest task in all of amateur sport. Just ask Peter Smith of Lachine, who coached Team Canada to a silver medal at the 2008 Women’s World Hockey Championship in China after a 4-3 loss to the archrival Americans...

Here comes the Big Melt of 2008

Winter is finally over. Well, let’s hope so. And now comes the Big Melt. Mountains of dirty snow still remain on nearly every corner of the West Island, but will surely disappear faster than it came. For those who built their own backyard rinks, the winter of 2008 will be remembered as a vintage year - even if near-record snow falls meant plenty of extra shoveling. “It was a great year for backyard rinks,” said John Calderone, whose Kirkland rink was featured...
