 <title>Wilkinson helps lift Canada to opening win</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;So far so good for Baie d’Urfé’s Rhian Wilkinson and the Canadian Olympic women’s soccer team.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Canada, ranked ninth in the world heading into the Olympics, opened the tournament today with a 2-1 thriller over Argentina.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Wilkinson, a product of the Lakeshore Soccer Club, set up one of Canada’s goals by Kara Lang.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title> McGill  sends 17-member entourage to Olympics</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Canoeist Thomas Hall and kayaker Andrew Willows, both members of the Pointe Claire Canoe Club, and physiotherapist Diana Perez of Beaconsfield are among 17 athletes and  support staff from McGill University headed to this month’s smoggy Beijing Olympics.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Palmer sprints to Beijing for Canada</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Hank Palmer is blazing a trail to the Olympics in Beijing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 23-year-old Pierrefonds native will run the anchor leg for Canada in the exciting 4x100-metre men’s relay race.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Palmer, who trains under Daniel St.Hilaire with the St.Laurent Selects track club, punched his ticket to Beijing earlier this month when he finished second in the men’s 100-metre race at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Windsor, Ont..&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He ran a personal-best time of 10.22 seconds, which bodes well for the big race in China.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Dorval&#039;s Fournel paddles her way to Beijing</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Dorval’s Émilie Fournel is a study in perseverance.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After failing to make the 2004 Olympic kayak team at just 17 years old, Fournel kept paddling away and will be rewarded for her efforts with a trip to next month’s Beijing Olympics.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Goyens hooks up with Lewiston juniors</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Jon Goyens  is making the jump to the Quebec major junior ranks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The  30-year-old Île  Bizard native  was appointed an assistant coach with the Lewiston Maineiacs, under head coach and GM Ed Harding.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s a well-deserved promotion for Goyens, who earned  a reputation for excellence here on the West Island.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He started last season with the midget espoirs Tigers and finished up with the Lac St.Louis midget Triple-A Lions.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Kirkland&#039;s Fernandez on road to recovery</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Manny Fernandez was born in Toronto in 1974, but later moved to Kirkland and grew up playing his minor hockey on the West Island.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Manny played midget Triple-A hockey for the Lac St. Louis Lions in 1990-91, before joining the Laval Titan of the QMJHL.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now he and his Boston teammate Patrice Bergeron trying to bounce back from injuries to regain their NHL form with the Bruins.&lt;/p&gt;

 <description>&lt;p&gt;The West Island has a long history of producing excellent sychronized swimmers, dating back to the Villagos sisters from Dollard to Beaconsfield’s Carolyn Waldo.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pointe Claire’s Tracy Little will continue that proud tradition next month in China at the Beijing Summer Olympics. She’ll swim for Canada in the synchro team event.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Leblanc invited to national U-18 hockey camp</title>

&lt;p&gt;A few people wondered why Kirkland’s Louis Leblanc opted to play another season of midget Triple-A hockey for the Lac St.Louis Lions after scoring a league-leading 31 goals as a rookie two years ago,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He notched another 54 goals this past season and the scouts at Hockey Canada noticed, Which explains why the 17-year-old Leblanc was the only midget hockey player in the country invited to the national under-18 summer evaluation camp in Calgary. The other  39 invitees are juniors.&lt;/p&gt;
