When I was a 14 – and my brother 20 – our father told us something that from then on defined our lives. We had just moved to a new house and my brother and I were arguing over who would get the bigger bedroom. Our dad intervened and firmly said, “You are the only brothers that you have. You only have each other in this world. I never want to see you fighting again.”

A few years ago, I was asked to take a few visiting Mexican businessmen out to dinner in the West Island. The person who arranged the tour briefed me: “After the evening is over, you hug and you are amigos from then on.” I thought that request was a bit odd but I agreed.

Let’s face facts: No matter how many outdoor skating rinks, monotonous winter carnivals and ski hills and cross-country trails you fluff up, winter for many West Islanders is utterly blah and a long, hard waiting game to when we can go outside in our shorts.

One day in 1900, Paul Harris went for a walk with fellow attorney Bob Frank in a Chicago neighbourhood, stopping at shops along the way. Harris was impressed with the way Frank had made friends with local businessmen. From this, Harris got an idea for a businessmen’s club that would gather for friendship and mutual co-operation. The first meeting had four members.
