Vanier women's basketball team takes third place

The Vanier Lady Cheetahs captured a bronze medal at the CEGEP Triple-A provincial basketball championships at Collège Ahuntsic on the weekend.

The Lady Cheetahs, coached by Ruby Viray, reached the podium after beating Montmorency 74-55 for third place on Sunday.

Mathilde Larochelle led Vanier with 22 points and four assists, while teammates Andrea Baptista and Liane Bailey added 14 points each.

Natasha Raposo also chipped in 12 points and five assists.

Dawson College took the women’s gold medal with a 76-69 win over the Ste. Foy Dynamiques.

Midget espoirs Tigers on playoff hunt

The Lac St. Louis Tigers’ midget espoirs playoff run picked up more steam Sunday with a 5-3 win over the first-place Sélects du Nord at Vincent Lecavalier Arena in Île Bizard.

The win improved the Tigers’ round-robin playoff record to 5-2-2, while the Lac St. Louis Royals are 4-4-2.

“We’ve been a funny team this year,” said Tigers general manager Chris Sides.
“We’ve beaten the best teams and we’ve lost to the worst teams.”

Lady Isles fall to Laflèche

John Abbott’s Veronic Auger scored a hat trick Saturday but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Isles dropped a 4-3 decision to Collège Laflèche in CEGEP women’s playoff action.

Jaymee Shell had a pair of assists for Hanks Binning’s Lady Islanders, who continue the round-robin portion of the playoffs tonight (6:50 p.m.) against Dawson.

This Saturday (4:15 p.m.), JAC plays host to Limoilou at Macdonald College Arena.

Lac St. Louis Lions win again

The Lac St. Louis Lions are one win away from advancing to the semifinals of the Quebec midget Triple-A hockey playoffs.

The Lions took a 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven quarterfinal series against the Trois Rivières Estacades with a 4-3 overtime win on Tuesday night at the Dollard Civic Centre.

Joseph Manno scored the winner for Lac St. Louis just 27 seconds into overtime.

Michael Matheson, with a pair, and Samuel Filion had the other Lions’ goals.
Goalie Ryan Kresevic made 24 saves to pick up the win.

Lac St. Louis Lions advance to second round of playoffs

The Lac St. Louis Lions are moving on.

The Lions advanced to the second round of the Quebec Midget Triple-A playoffs on Sunday by defeating the Amos Forestiers 3-1 in the best-of-five opening series.

The Lions eliminated the Forestiers by a 4-3 score in Game 4 at the Dollard Civic Centre.
Lions forward Joseph Manno scored the winning goal late in the third period, while netminder Ryan Kresevic made 23 saves to earn his third playoff win in four starts.

Peewee AA Royals win tournament in Lévis

The West Island peewee AA Royals beat the Harfangs de Sherbrooke 2-0 to win the International Peewee B.S.R. Tournament in Lévis.

Members of the winning team are Justin Mayers, Tyler Piechota, Aiden Rodgers, Francis Deschenes, Tristan Coveny, Maxime Bedard, Shawn Moors, Maxime Fortier, Hunter Moreau, Massimo Luciani, Chris Chaddock, Mathieu Rafter, Michael Nantais, Michael Campoli, Marcus Gialiris and Ty Fournier.

The head coach is Frank Boyer, assisted by Ryan Kelly, Louis Richard and manager Lino Luciani.

Lakeshore Leopards win novice tourney

The Lakeshore Leopards novice A team went undefeated to capture the sixth annual Capital House League Championships in Ottawa.

The Leopards are Sam de Heuvel, Nicolas Brien, Joshua Guimond, Massimo Riccio, Jack Tsonos, Domenic Marzitelli, Nicolas Richard, Lucas Debonville, Mathieu Brien, Benjamin Morelli-Kirshner, Patrick Hussey, Cade Penney, Nicolas Bourada and Cody Bayer.

Head coach Mike De Heuvel is assisted by Mike Penney, Elio Marzitelli, Mark Bayer and manager Tony Richard.

Martlets named to dream team

McGill Martlets team captain Vanessa Davidson, a fifth-year senior from Kirkland, was named to the Quebec university women’s 2009-10 First All-Star hockey team.

Davidson, 25, also captured the conference scoring crown for the third time in five years with 13-20-33 point totals in 20 games.

Teammate Caroline Hill, a 24-year-old senior rearguard from Dorval, earned second-team honours, while Kim Thon-That, a 19-year-old forward from Vaudreuil-Dorion, made the league’s all-rookie squad.
