Lady Islanders struggling

The John Abbott Lady Islanders and St. Laurent Patriotes sit atop the food chain for girls hockey on the West Island.
However, both hockey teams are toiling at the bottom of the CEGEP women’s hockey standings this season.
The Lady Isles (3-8) occupy eighth spot in the nine-team league, while St. Laurent (3-9) is in the cellar with a game in hand.
The good news is that both teams practically have nowhere to go but up with more than half a season still to go.

Many apply to be John Abbott football coach

John Abbott athletic director Steve Shaw has begun sifting through nearly a dozen applications for the head coaching position of the JAC men’s football team.
“That is the most applications we’ve ever received for a coaching position that I can ever remember,” said Shaw, a member of the committee that will soon begin the interview process.
Some candidates are more prominent in local football circles than others, said Shaw, who is confident he’ll find a suitable coach to guide the team for the 2009 season.

Lions cap a perfect season with another title

The North Shore Lions have done it again.
The powerhouse Lions capped another perfect season Sunday with a 17-8 win over the host St. Léonard Cougars in the Quebec Bantam Football League championship game.
The Lions improved their sparkling record to 13-0 with a stellar defensive performance that kept their east-end opponents at bay at chilly Stade Hébert.
“Our defence really showed up to play,” said Lions head coach Jason Jourdenais.
The defending champion Lions were favoured to win handily, but St. Léonard proved to be a worthy opponent.
