Literacy Unlimited, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping adults in the West Island improve their literacy skills, is looking for volunteers with the following capabilities to serve on its board of directors:

* Interpersonal and leadership skills, time and energy to take on various responsibilities as a board member
and/or

* Public speaking capabilities and time to prepare and give presentations about the organization to companies as part of our corporate fundraising objectives. Company contacts within the area would be an asset.

John Abbott College students in Professor Barry Reynolds’s Community and Communication class, a practical communication course focused on doing volunteer work in a community context, have joined forces with Volunteer West Island.

Kirkland Meals on Wheels has a new home

As of the beginning of October, the dedicated volunteers responsible for Kirkland Meals on Wheels are working in a new setting, following a reorganization and move.

The MoW kitchen, now in the Church of St. John the Baptist, started up Oct. 1, continuing to provide their regular clients with fresh, hot, nutritious meals at minimal cost, meals prepared by volunteers who add a secret ingredient: loving care.

Deliveries will be twice weekly: Wednesdays and Fridays.

Smiles, laughter and tantalizing aromas pervaded the facilities of the Omega Centre in Dorval Oct. 1st. The team of enthusiastic Alcan employee volunteers proved how talented and polyvalent they are.

TD Canada Trust Employees Raise Record Amount for West Island Community Shares!

The results are in! TD Canada Trust’s 8th Annual Spaghetti Lunch held Sept. 7th at the popular Vieux Four Manago Restaurant raised a record-breaking $90,000 for West Island Community Shares! This represents a 20-per-cent increase over last year’s event.

Claude Papasian, vice-president, Western District, TD Canada Trust, presented Karen Groom, president of the board of directors of Community Shares, with a cheque for this unprecedented amount. The lunch is the largest corporate-led fundraising event to benefit Community Shares.

Another outstanding success for the West Island community!

Wednesday, Aug. 20th, marked Volunteer West Island’s 8th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, held at the St. Raphael Golf Club in Ile Bizard. Even the weather co-operated! Sunshine, fresh air, fun, prizes galore!

Most impressive of all was the collaboration among sponsors, donors, and many, many volunteers, working together to benefit seniors in the West Island community and make this yearly event a tremendous success.
